Getting ready to install the gold strips on the side of the car. When I removed them (first time they've been off since new), I found that the factory used some sort of adhesive, I guess to hold it in place during assembly, and to also keep them from rattling around once installed.
What would be a good modern substitute?

I just used contact cement.

3M Strip Caulk 08578.   Essentially a box of butyl tape strips that do not harden but are sticky and can be flattened.

Also great for use under interior trim to prevent squeaks and rattles.

Thanks for the tips guys. I like the sound of that strip caulk, and I think I've already got some in the garage.
