Hi there. Is there a way to find out the history of my Ranchero through the vin number? Like what dealership sold it, or where it ended up? I know the car was assembled in Kansas City, Missouri.
Thanks, Robin.

Other than the DSO I don't see how you could find out which dealership it went to besides a Marti report. Marti report dealer invoices start in 1967 I think.

Maybe through the DMV in your state.

If your Ranchero has the early 57 style data plate with a production code stamped on it I might be able to help a little.

Lou, how do I determine if I have an "early '57 style data plate"? What am I looking for?
Thanks

X2 what KYBlueOval  stated.   That would be interesting to know.

Most of the pre 1967 Ford production numbers were lost in a fire.

Underneath the serial number is a line of stamping the first is the body style code on a ranchero it will be 66A or 66B then reading left to right is the color code, then the trim code then the date code a early plate will have a production code next, a later plate will have a trans code and last a axle code.

Some previous owner painted over mine :005: Anyone have a suggestion on how to remove paint and not destroy it?

you should be able to read it, even with paint on it. the numbers are stamped from behind and show raised on front.

It would be very tedious being in a hard to reach spot for us old guys, but I would think a careful application of paint remover with the surrounding areas masked off really well. You'd more than likely have to redo the oem black paint. I suspect the originals were silkscreened though, not painted. Mine was in almost perfect shape, so I elected to remove it before stripping the car down. Yes. I know. we're not suppose to mess with the factory riveting, but what would one do if the car was going to be tank/stripped? I've never had a problem, yet, of my car passing inspection, but I've also never registered it in a state that is real strict on that stuff.
If I did, I'd contact the dmv before removal for restoration.
I can do this, I can do this, I, well, maybe

When I bought my car 12 years ago my car it had a new reproduction data plate. So they are available if you need a new one.

That is probably what I will end up doing.
