What is the purpose of theese pieces in the cowl?

These pieces are from inside the cowl, below the cowl vent. The large piece is from the passenger side, and the smaller piece is from the drivers side.
What purpose do they serve? I don't see the need for either and at the same time I recognize that Henry and his engineers didn't waste any money on unnecessary parts. I'd like to eliminate them but hesitate until I know WHY there are there in the first place.
What am I not seeing here?
Thanks
John

Aren't those the covers to access the wiper motor pivots. I think they need to be removed if you want service, adjust or remove the pivots, cable assembly.

Don't know their purpose, but I eliminated mine.

I would imagine that Ford put those shields in to protect the wiper cables and mechanisms from leaves, snow and other debris, and to help direct water from getting into them. As mentioned, I am sure Ford put them there for a reason.

Thanks for the replies. I switched to a wiper system from Specialty Power Windows, so I believe I'll not be installing these pieces.

I believe they are kind of heavy rain baffles, redirecting water from the vent channels and into the drain hoses. I have those and will reassemble  some day.
