The black cloud

As I'v said before this retractable I'm restoring has a big black cloud hanging over it. Last winter I had the power steering control valve rebuild, by Concours Parts, had them do others for me with no problem. However this time I couldn't get the port on return line to stop leaking. This is without the car running.  So they told me to send it back and they would go though it again. Took it off boxed it up and sent it UPS.  Got a call from ConCours this afternoon and was told they received the package, lots of packing, copy of my original invoice, but no valve, what the hell. They said it looked like the box was broke open and they, UPS, just taped up and sent on its way.  So now I need another control valve that I don't have and will have to have it rebuilt when I find one. In all my years of doing this I have never had so much go wrong.  and as they say tomarrow is another day.

Did UPS insure the package, so that you don't suffer more financially?  What years will interchange?

Welcome to the New Normal.  Shippers are so overwhelmed that undamaged, prompt delivery is unlikely.  I just bought a used $300 part that the seller poorly packaged.  A two day promised delivery turned into four weeks.  I did finally get the box with a big hole in the side, a little brown wrapping paper and a note from the Post Master saying 'sorry about your luck'.  The seller felt no responsibility.

When I added power steering to my wagon, I found a '64 Galaxie donor.  '63-64 donors are more common than '57s and the new steering box was a plus.

I'v shipped and sent lots of parts though the years always make sure they are well wrapped and boxed. Never had a problem . I heard about lost parts , but it was never me, always the other guy.

I went out to a salvage yard today. I found a 62 or 63 comet with ps and several mustangs also.  What does the control valve look like and where is it located?

Gasman, I believe I saw a 62 ford used an isolator above the steering gear is that that the same with 64? I saw nothing in the big fords that still had the ps in tact.

I believe '61-'64 full size car PS valves interchange.  The valve on the wagon was custom reman'ed by CARDONE Remanufacturer for nearly $400 several years ago.  I just bought a '64 valve as a core and wanted to get it rebuilt as a spare.  CARDONE said they no longer did custom, vintage rebuilds.  The Eclker group ie Mac's, Dearborn, etc., offer valves or custom valve service and are very proud of the core value ($350)!  I found the vintage PS specialists are way more reasonable.  There are more than one offering custom rebuilds for $200-230.  The only things I know enough to ask about is turnaround time and if they replace or machine the hose seats.  It is very common that the seats are damaged because the hoses have been over torqued.  I did not ask if these custom shops would rebuild '57 valves but I assume they would.  If you have a quality core, you should be good.  The core end cap needs to be in useable condition.  Inventor of caps has been depleted.

PS.  The unibody cars are different and do NOT interchange.  '57-'59 should interchange...lower pressure pumps...'60 and up use a different pump pressure relief setting.  I have used a '57 pump with a '64 valve.  I've also used a '97 pump with the '64 valve and seen no difference.

I have a ps valve that was rebuilt a bunch of years ago but I never used it . It?s still attached to the drag link . If you would like it you can have it for the cost of shipping. It?s just collecting dust in my garage as I will never use it

That's the reason I tell everyone that this is the best site on the internet.

I agree with Jay, so many members here have helped me with my projects.

Can't get any better than that!

You can buy new hose seats for the control valves. The old ones just pop out with a pick. AutoKrafters carry them. They come 4 to a package. Catch is one of the seats comes in 2 different sizes depending on what you have and they only carry the kit with one of the sizes.

Thanks!  This is just another example of the cooperation that exists within this club!  AutoKrafters listing may not be for '57s but really helps out for the '60-'64 Galaxie conversions.  With a seal kit and seat kit, I might try a rebuild myself.
