hi all,    the people working on my emergency hook up are having problems,  & I can't  find  anything like pictures of the  whole system,  any 1 have any thing to help?   starting to give up on this car repair place,  & its gettng harder  fnding people to work on our cars,   thanks

Here are a few pictures of the cable system below the floor. I may have more pictures of the cable setup below the dash and also of mounting of the brake shoes if you need them. Jerry

thanks for the pictures,    the frame shows what should have been the easy part,   put I think  the release handle part is the problem,    monday I'll have to talk to the shop & c if there ordering a new under  dash kit,  any morre its a pain when you can't do  the work yourself

glr7533

Here are some pictures from under the dash. The cable is missing that goes from the handle and through the outside sheath. If I remember right the pin that sticks out from the side of the tube is a press fit and is removed so the new cable can be installed and then pressed back in.  Jerry

great pics, but just to make things clear and eliminate missunderstanding. The third pic shows the hood release handle. it has nothing to do with the hand brake lever.

You are right, I looked at the bracket and for some reason didn't see that there was a cable attached to it instead of the metal tube. Just another sign of old age. Jerry

like I said before,  the pictures were great,  but If only I could see under the car from  the firewall to  the hookup to  the arm that holds the 2 brake cables,  I think thats where my problem is,    Jerry

"the pin" can be clearly seen in the second picture. It is a knurled press fit perpendicular into the shaft and it guides the shaft in a slot in the outer tube so that the handle/shaft cannot be removed until the pin is removed. I removed mine with a pair of vice grips by gripping and prying the pin out. DO NOT twist the pin, it can break (ask me how I know). I actually bought several threaded stepped socket headed cap screws as future backup. I will post a broken pin and a cap screw replacement picture. I had a spare pin that is in now, it is bent but working. If it breaks I will tap the hole in the shaft for the screw. I have a couple of screws I can provide if desired.

thanks  for the pictures and help.  might  take u  up on  the pins,  we'll see  what the place doing my  work says,  thanks   again

to Lalessi1,   I've looked many times,  are  you referring to the pin holding  the pulley which looks to have a cotter pin in it,  if thats it,  why a press fit?

gasman826

It has been more than 25 years ago that I disassembled my parking brake mechanism.  I don't remember how I removed the pressed fit pin but I do remember thinking how silly it was.  I didn't know there was a threaded pin upgrade so I tapped the hole and made a sleeve for a bolt to mimic the shape of the press-in pin.  It has been apart several times over the years and continues to serve well.

ok,  1st,  no ones  said for me,  is the pin in the pulley?,  an 2nd,  in cars  early days when being  built were over built,  I was in fords tool & die,  so I know how things have changed,  I had a 51 ford that I restored & sold 10 years ago,  I also worked in the try out dept that  perfected  dies  to make parts,  fenders,  hood, inner panels etc,  example,  the 51 ford inner panel on the trunk  lid had so much double metal,  today,  no such thng,  now it would have been smooth,  metal has inproved so much since then,  also now on my 57 ford conv I have  cut some of  the inner panels with a saw all for axcess to  the mounting screws on some of the outside stainless trim,  more metal then needed for supporting diff things, same thng with the doors,  when  my window went out of track & hard to get to,  cut some holes inside door panel for easy axcess to rollers etc, point being, car dealers over built.  guessI got carried away,   sorry,    ,

That is not it.

In the pic I posted the pin in the picture (on the left) is the actual pin I am referring to not the threaded shoulder bolt). In the second pic posted by glr7533 the pin is sticking out of the upper side of the brake handle shaft a couple of inches from the pulley at the bottom. I am sure that is what the shop is trying to understand. You can't change the cable without removing that pin and pulling the handle/shaft out with the cable attached. Another picture....Help that helps....
