Ranchero Tailgate Question

I'm in the process of "test fitting" various pieces and after test fitting the ribbed, interior tailgate panel, there is a recessed area with a hole in the center, at the top, left and right corners.
I have no idea as what goes there.
It is not a screw hole for mounting the latch mechanism as far a I can tell, as there is no corresponding hole for such a screw in the latch.
Help!
Thanks
John

Could it be for a rubber bumper?

KYBlueOval

Ray, it very well could be for a rubber bumper, BUT, I don't see what the bumper would come in contact with.
Members of the FORUM, much smarter than me will know........I hope.

Out of curiosity I looked at a few images of that year Ranchero tailgate. All the pics just show a Philips screw. Maybe it holds something together on the inside?

When I was building mine I wondered the same thing, there is nothing behind that a screw would go in to besides it has all the other screws that attach it to the tailgate, mine has always been that way just two mystery holes.

Well, that is not what I expected, but does not surprise me at the same time.Could it have application for a station wagon? Just a thought.
I'll put a screw in it.
Thanks for the replies!

I was thinking that. I don't have access to one anymore, but with the recess, it definitely is for a snubber rubber...and the station-wagon would be the obvious likelihood.

Maybe someone with a wagon will see this post and tell us if there is such a bumper/snubber on wagons.

The wagons use a different panel, basically a flat panel with stainless strips.

I thought I posted a response here but I can't find it now. Anyhow it if for a screw that a wagon uses. Here is my TG with a screw to hold down the inner cover. I missed the photos originally when I read the post.
