Title: Check out the car if you can.
Post by: RICH MUISE on 2016-01-01 14:14
This was posted on the 52-59 Hamb social club. If you can focus on the car for a minute, there's some stuff on it I'm not recognizing. First, there's the chrome/stainless piece on the back top of the fender. My guess there it's a trim piece for a spotlight that's no longer there?? But the big mystery...what's going on between the vent window and the windshield. At first glance I thought it was an accent paint, but looking at it further, it looks 3 dimensional, and chrome or ss. Were there aftermarket trim pieces available for the '57's that I've never seen before? It would be easier to figure out if it were a color photo. BTW, funny...notice the reflection in the paint of the guys just watching...or maybe just the camera crew, it's obviously not a candid photo.

I can blow the picture up here..couldn't on the Hamb. Maybe that area in front of the wing window is paint as I first assumed. I need to find out more info on the shot...what date the magazine is...I'd sure like to track down a copy.

Looks to be painted Rich.. and the reflections are in the top of the door.... but maybe your right.. never seen any aftermarket piece like that.

1957 Dodge hubcaps? See those flipper caps around quite a bit back in the day.

Nice legs to.

That was the first thing that caught me eye.

have to add my 2 cents.   1st,  u do know that its a conv?,  right?,    are u talking about what looks like a character line in the windshied trim in front of the vent,  i just checked my conv and its flat, and i'm sure those are not dodge lancer hubcaps but after market,   jerry

I was thinking that myself Lalessi.

There is a car in the pic?

Not a convertible.  That's a Fairlane post car, look at the top of the door, the stainless top and surround, plus, that is a metal roof on it, not cloth.

I downloaded a series of pics of that car years ago. because of the 57 Ford interest....ahem.... :003:
I think we have a Custom 2dr Sedan in the pics with the window frame and a post painted to look like chromed Fairlane 500 Sedan parts.  A real Fairlane would have wider chrome moldings around the windshield/roof like this car. Maybe they used chrome foil/tape, which was a trend at the time.

That was my thinking on the Custom, A color photo would have probably made the detective work a little easier on what they did to the post. Thanks for posting that, DJ!

I think it is a Fairlane, not a Fairlane 500. Could be either a 4 dr or a 2 dr sedan....

Unless it was 58 Edsel Ranger trim and doors.  The Ranger had a 500 body, roof and glass but it did not have the large trim over the windshield.  It did have chrome vent windows and stainless window frames, wrap around the "A" pillar stainless and no trim on the doors at the crease.

Some of the victorias did not have the large trim over the windshield, but they did have a badge/emlem on the front fender, unlike the Customs which had nothing. This is another pic from the same photoshoot one of the Hamb members dug up. Note the '57 way in the background. To far back for any helpful details, but it does appear to not have the F-O-R-D letters on the nose, which means the fender emlems could have been removed as well if it is a Fairlane. Actually not sure if the Victorias had the nose letters, I'm sure Bill or somebody else with a Victoria will clarify that. Also, Bill, the Ranger had wrap around the A pillar stainless?? I guess it was a seperate piece from the windshield trim or you couldn't get it on/off??

Yes, it is much like the 500 but stopped short at the gutter.  The windshield trim had two side pieces, one top piece and the same two plus the little gap filler on the bottom just like every 57/58 Ford.

Jay's factory-delete-everything E70A business sedan NEVER had the Ford letters nor holes for it in the front panel. It would be easy to assume that they started with a car like that for dragracing, lightweight and fast. instead of dechroming and shaving a Fairlane, 500 or putting Edsel windshield trim on a Fairlane or even putting a 57 front on an Edsel. These pics are very early and I think those cars must still have been quite new. just saying.

Ha....! I searched my 57 files and found this!  :-\
Is that a Fairlane 500 2dr with shaved badges, chromed a posts and WITHOUT the fat windshield trim ????

The 57 in the background in Rich's picture doesn't even have a OEM grill or parking lights from what I can see..

I think you're correct Jim, and that would go along nicely with the Lancer type caps, lakes pipes and spotlights we can see in the first pics. Those pics were from a photoshoot of the all-girl car club, and only a few had the '57 in them. The newest car in the shoot was a '59 Impala convert that looked pretty new. No dates or other info given with the postings, my guess it was probably summer of '59 or 60. It was Kansas City, and everyone is wearing summer clothes.

Doesn't this car look the same as far as the roof/chrome/ vent windows go... or did i miss something? My computer won't let me post the pic directly.

It is definitely not a Custom.... Compare this picture with the second picture, (the one with the boy hanging out of the window). The windshield is taller on the Custom, the top of the doors are not the same, the vent window shape is different and look at the rear window trim inside the car.....

Post by: RICH MUISE on 2016-01-04 15:10
OK, OK, but the legs are still nice. The rear window inside trim was the deciding factor for me. I thought the windshield height was a sedan vs hardtop thing, not a Custom vs Fairlane thing.

I think it is a 64A Fairlane Club Sedan - no stainless on the front fender, smaller stainless trim around the windshield than a 500, stainless trim around the doors including in front of the vent window. With regards nose lettering, the Fairlanes have the word "Fairlane" in script as opposed to individual lettering of F O R D.
The trim on top of the fender does look like the moulding where the spotlight/mirror shaft would go through (just been out to have a look at mine, although I only have left hand one, not right hand.

ok,  i'm not the expert,  i thought it was a conv,  but it sure is diff then ones i've seen,  thats not a normal top or roof line,  this summer i'll check to be sure,  theres quite a few of the 300's or fairlanes around here,  and i'll get back,       i still say those are not dodge lancers hubcaps.         that is  one nice 57 picture from djfordmanjack,   jerry

I agree, it looks like the Club Sedan from the windshield trim.

All 57's had either the FORD or Fairlane emblem on the nose panel.
The replacement panels were not drilled.

Jay's would have been a 70D. Out of curiosity, I checked the 1957ford.com site, and most of the business sedans did not have the lettering on the nose as you mentioned..... (Hard to tell in most of the pics because the image sizes there are so small.). However, look at the pics of John Gambel's red 70D project car he trailered home in 2007. It's clearly got the F-O-R-D letters on the nose. A few other's on that page have as well. Probably the only way we would know for sure is from a 57 sales brochure, given 50 years of posible sheetmetal replacements.

I'm low on the learning curve on '57 Fords, but moving up with the help of this Forum. My interest in this thread is the Stainless Trim being described and can it be used on a Ranchero?  See if I have this right, and if not, correct me. The 64A Fairlane Club Sedan, from the photos I've looked at, has Stainless Trim between the vent window and the "A" Pillar. There appears to be a narrow piece of Stainless Trim on the "A" pillar itself, butting up to the Stainless Windshield Trim, covering what would be pained on my Ranchero. In addition, the 64A Fairlane Club Sedan's doors have Stainless across the top of the door and down the vertical portion that adjoins the "B" Pillar.
Will the Stainless Trim, I've described above from a '57 /  64A Fairlane Club Sedan or any other model '57 or Edsel , fit on my Ranchero?  Is it truly trim applied over the existing upper door frame or do I have to use the entire door ? What other models/ years......Ford or Edsel have this same trim as the 64A Fairlane Club Sedan ?
Thanks
John

I did a little research after looking at this thread and discovered there are a lot more differences between the Fairlanes and the Customs (Rancheros) than I ever realized. The ledge of the door (where you might rest your arm) where the window goes down is completely different between these cars. The Ranchero door has a raised "lip", the Fairlane door is rounded off with no lip making the side windows lower. The doors are completely different as are the frames that surround the side windows. The windshields are taller on the Rancheros and the rake appears to be more vertical. This makes the A pillars completely different. The Fairlane doors nor trim pieces will not fit a Ranchero. That said I guess one could do that with with sufficient resources and skills.....

The windshield on the 300/wagon/Ranchero is a full inch plus a little longer then the 500 series when measured at the center top to bottom.  The stainless from a 500 series could be made to fit, just a matter of time and money.  I think it would be easier to splice a 500 roof at the "A" pillar and use 500 stuff.  The lower three pieces of windshield stainless are the same for both series.

The 58 Edsel junior series are based on Fords 500 series, the wagons are the same base.  59 and 60 are all Ford based.

I love the old illustations, and much earlier than that example, I love the published engravings that usually had two autographs or initials...one for the engraver who was copying an original by another artist.
That kid is 60ish now...If somebody lived in the Kansas city area maybe he could be tracked down and see if he still has mom's car.

Having never owned a Model 64 I was curious about the odd door arrangement especially since no one sells rubber
seals for them. (I have been considering adding a Dennis Carpenter franchise). It seems they use the hardtop/conv
door with bolt on window frames and pieces for the "chrome post" effect.

So there are only two part #'s for 2dr front door shells for 1957-58 (and each side of course).

All the factory brochures are artist conceptions not photos but they all show a "nose" moulding.
The nose moldings, headlite rings and grilles took most of the "parking lot" damage and were often replaced.
Nose panels weren't that hard to replace before 50 years of rust and mud took their toll!
Back then you could buy those parts at your local autoparts store just like you can buy cheap chinese repop fenders now.
I have a few "brown bag" parts in my collection of 57 stuff.

Ron.

Thanks Lynn and others that replied. I won't be putting any of those "shinny parts" on my Ranchero based on your information. It was a good thought for about 24 hours. I'm constantly amazed at how much different tooling there was for the various models that look so similar at a quick glance.
