Just sharing a picture of the Michigan corn, nice day for getting gas 5.18 a gallon, 1957 that could have put 17 gallons in the tank. Anyways a beautiful day to burn some fuel and cruise the neighbor hood.IMG_1065.jpg

Were at $2.50 a liter for Chevron 94 so roughly $9.00 a gallon. Not sure, I've never checked the mileage on my 57 but pretty sure I'm close to single digit miles per gallon city and 13 or so highway. When I take it for drive I better enjoy every second of it for what it's costing me.

Yours has a 460 in it doesn't it?

My 57 custom 300, has a 460, C6, 370 rear end so she goes through the fuel, especially on these flat straight country roads. When it comes to driving these types of cars, I look at it as Smiles per Mile !! Yes that exhaust sound is music to the ears at the same time. You hate to put her back in the garage..

I guess I need to stop bitchin' about our 4.59 a gallon and my 18-low 20's mpg. I've been diving my '57 a lot less this year, took my dd Outback on a 760 mile road trip to New Mexico Friday and Saturday. It gets 32 mpg., but those $60. fillups still hurt. My next planned '57 Roadtrip is in 3 weeks to Santa Fe on July 4. I just got in a fuel injector rebuild kit for it. I'm hoping the injector rebuilds and new plugs will get back the few mpg I've lost in the past year or so. If that doesn't do it, a set of new coils (cop) is next. This time I'll spring for the Motorcraft brand.

I have the option to drive 2 miles and cross into the USA and save $40.00 per tank.  My 410 gets 16 mpg since I added the 5-speed.
When it comes to the price I just remind myself my eye drops are $6,500.00 per gallon.

How many gallons of gas does the stock 57 custom tank hold?

I long ago adopted the feeling and opinion that if gas prices are a major concern for driving a "Hot Rod, Vintage, Rest-o-mod or Muscle car" for fun you're in the wrong hobby.  You should consider chasing little white balls around the pasture.

Having said that, I am so happy that the commute to work is over for me!  I just can;t wrap my mind around what some folks are doing to stay afloat.  My youngest brother is an independent long haul trucker and is struggling with fuel cost.

I just can't wrap my head around what's happening with gas prices with the oil companies knowing the current administration is pushing for conversion to electric cars. Seems like the high prices are supporting their opposition's push.

Sky high gas prices is not a very good strategy to get re-elected. I don't know how much control a government has over the price of crude oil but I would think not much nowadays especially with the conflict in the Ukraine disrupting supply from Russia.

Louisiana is a producer of oil and gas (obviously) and the government policies regarding exploration, production, and pipeline development are VERY counter productive and they effect our local economy. They were changed before the Russian invasion and I suspect that was a consideration in making the decision to go to war when they did. I do believe the administration policies were changed to have the result of a rise in prices to encourage the switch to electric cars. IMHO.

I have to agree with Lynn.  I believe that, for the most part, the high prices at the pump are designed to push us toward "green" vehicles which the power grid cannot currently support.  I look at gas the same way I look at gambling.   Put money on the table or gas into the tank, consider it gone.  How long before you put more money down or mor gas in depends upon how long you want to sit there or how long you want to drive.

Its a similar situation in Texas and Oklahoma.  I heard an environmentalist explain their rationale regarding pipelines and oil production a few years ago.  He said as long as gasoline, diesel, coal and natural gas were relatively cheap that people will never move toward "alternate" fuels, and so their strategy was to have politicians make policies that would make fuel prices so high that consumers would be forced to seek alternate fuels for travel and home.  The problem is that they don't realize (or don't care) that petroleum products aren't just used for cars and trucks.  Petroleum is used in making plastics, fertilizer, composites, and many other things that are essential to modern life.  Many people in rural areas use propane to heat.  My son works for a diesel, and propane distributor and he said that the average cost to fill a large tractor went up $300 last week.  That fuel is used up in one day of field work.  One of their long haul trucker customers fuel cost is up $1000 per week.  Those costs get passed on through increase in product costs to us the consumer.  A couple years ago we were a net exporter of oil which drove the prices down significantly to the point that the oil and gas industry had significant lay offs, including me, but our gas was just over $2 a gallon.  Its a globally traded commodity, so with the U.S. no longer producing high volumes OPEC, Iran, and Russia can dictate the prices and the environmentalists meet their objective.

I agree with everything said. For what it's worth I started this conversation fully aware we were going to be walking on the edge of political discussion, but this deeply affects our hobby and pastimes, so I thought it needed to be done. I had been biting my young for a while. All of you guys have done a great job discussing the situation without getting political/pointing fingers. Kudos!

First, that is a great pic of the black 57 sitting next to the cornfield. great colors of the green and blue, contrasting the flat black custom !
Thank you Rich, for allowing this conversation. your reasoning is spot on.
The dramatic increase on gas price is one of the major reasons that I do not take my 57CS for extended drives anymore. Originally , when purchasing my 57, I intended it to be a daily driver, at least for shopping needs or the occasional longer trip, visiting my friends in Germany or Croatia and Italy.
All of this has come to a sudden end, seeing that a 500 mile round trip to Southern Germany would cost me close to $500 in gas and road fees. that is $1 a mile. go figure. no fun to be had anymore.
Rich, while you are still struggling with $4.59 /gln, I want you to know that we are over $10/ gln right now ( was  $15 at the beginning of the crisis in March). Germany withdrew their environmental taxes on gas last week for now, so that means , actually fuel in Austria is the highest ever recorded and higher than in Germany, which is a total break on the traditional price comparison. Most all of our neighboring countries have frozen the gas price to about $7. not Austria.
I am not going to drop any names or things, but I do believe there is some reasoning behind that price torture.
Some people, like me are mostly only affected with their hobby and leasure time doings, but I feel really sorry for those who make a living from trucking, agricultural work, or having to commute to work aso.
For me, I wish I had a 3.0 rearend AND an overdrive AT and a SBF in my 57CS.

I might be walking the edge here.  This administration ran on "The Green New Deal" and won.  We Americans as a whole are a funny bunch of folks!  Get a bunch of feel good words put on paper and go about our routines.  That is with respect just about everything that affects our daily lives.  After it is on paper and every one is full of warm fuzzies the unexpected and unintended consequences of what they just signed on to become reality and the crying begins.  I know, I am  :deadhorse:
