well said Gary.
Modern cars could be much more economical if they didn't have to carry 500 pds of nonsense around. Think of how Ford built the compacts like Falcon and Comet at 2500pds or less, more than 50 yrs ago !
With my 1962 144 L6 Comet it made the same milage as 50 yrs younger  SUV or modern fullsize.

What I meant to point out wiht the 302 was, if you want to have good acceleration you have to use the right transmission and especially rear axle ratio. I feel that the 302 comes to life at 3000 up. It will make a good low rpm cruiser as well but will lack the torque for faster acceleration in high gear.
The 302 in my 34 does approx 1800RPM at 60mph with tall tires and the 2.47 rear and it works really nice, but then the 34 is much lighter than a 57 and I feel the gearing should not be any taller for my car. I'd be really curious about the ratio of your rear axle and your driving experience as soon as the Ranchero is on the road. I am particulary interested in how it works out with the very tall 0.67 AOD OD.
I think that the AOD will give you a great total ratio for the Ranchero with a 3.96 or 4.11 rear. It would take the total gearing down to approx 2.8.
Reason for all of my saying is that I have been reading and collecting info and drivetrain parts for quite some time. I have 2 AODS 2 C4s a 289,302,351 and even a speed gems adapter to put a Y block in front of a AOD. my rear axles are 2.47 and 3.25 and I have a 3.0 Maverick 8". Not bragging. some of those are in my cars, some spare parts. I am just investigating what will be my favorite drivetrain combo for the future. I think there is a lot to gain in driving pleasure with the right drivetrain. While some might be all out for power like James with the 427 , others might just want a reliable everyday fuel saving cruiser. I think here in Europe we do appreciate milage and Autobahnability ( :003:) more than all out power.

To be honest the choice of using an AOD was simply because one came with the Ranchero, so I'll report on how well it all works when it's on the road (hopefully in a couple of months).

This is the only car site that I now of where the members go that extra mile to help fellow  car guys.
They share their parts and their priceless knowledge and experience.   I can't even count all of the times
that I have received help here.  It is greatly appreciated

All of the goodwill that happens here overshadows   the SMITEr..

Agree 100%, from what I can see EVERY single poster on here is a decent sort who is only too happy to go over & above to help fellow enthusiasts, wherever they may be.  I guess the Smiters are more like snipers and lurk in the undergrowth, ready to strike a smite and scurry back into the undergrowth with no-one noticing them.

It may just be somebody who doesn't understand what the button is for?

Question: can visitors to the site use the buttons or only members?

?? the only posts I did when I got the last two were when I was commenting on DJ's back floor pan looking different, and when I posted a comment on the doors wanted thread that I sent a pm to Bill. I guess either could have angered someone.
Funny, I was thinking about suggesting the button be renamed (to "disagree"?), but at least this way I can always chaulk it up to someone not understanding what "smite" meant....I didn't, I just assumed it was the opposite of applaud.
With that said, I've got upwards of 7000 posts, if 12 of them annoyed someone, that ain't all that bad, and I still think the feature should remain intact. It really is a good thing...makes you rethink how you're wording stuff sometimes so you don't unintentionally bash someone. :001:
With that in mind, a funny thought, most of you guys know how nasty the Hamb can get sometimes......ever notice they only have a "like" button. Can you imagine the tally some would have if they had a negative button.

I sometimes wonder who's toes I stepped on to get the smites, but I really don't care  :003:

Very true.  I'm always conscious that although we speak the same language we spell certain things differently, use different phrases and sometimes have very different sense of humours, hence whenever I type something on here I have to "think American".  Also the typed word can be read very differently to how the person that typed it meant it to be read.

Haha!  Oh yes, I've seen some real nasty arguments on there!  I stopped using it after I discovered this place, I found that over there I was typing, then re-typing several times before actually posting something for fear of someone taking it the wrong way.  Unfortunately doing that your ends up with your post not displaying any feelings whatsoever and almost looks like it's been written by a robot!

I got my first one when I wrote about annual vehicle safety inspections (based on what we have here) and I think some mistook my post for me meaning that I thought everyone should have them, rather than just a general discussion around them.  I got my second one after I posted this thread which I think was because I used the "C" word (C***y).........
