Wilbur Rakestraw, June 6, 1928 ? May 7, 2014, was an American racing car driver. He was born in Dallas, Georgia into a family of racers. His career included racing in the SRE (Southeastern Racing Enterprises) organization as well as the 11 NASCAR Grand National and 30 Convertible races. Rakestraw was known for his toughness and thoughtfulness of other drivers due to one incident at Lakewood Speedway in 1957 when he drove through a fence and into the infield lake to avoid T-boning another driver who had crashed in front of him. After he retired from racing, Rakestraw went to work as a mechanic and later became a service manager for a local grading company
When I was fourteen years old, I was amazed at how unintelligent my father was. By the time I turned twenty-one, I was astounded at how much he had learned in the last seven years!

Thanks Joe. The reason I asked is that when I was around 16 or 17 I used to hang out at a Gulf Station on Peachtree Rd, in Buckhead, in Atlanta, owned by the Rakestraw family. There never was a race car on the property, but I do recall many racing conversations among the employees, regarding Wilbur and his driving skills.
