When I was fourteen years old, I was amazed at how unintelligent my father was. By the time I turned twenty-one, I was astounded at how much he had learned in the last seven years!

I like that Fairlane, was it a 390 GTA, or a different 4 speed model?.

The emblem on the grill says XL. So no GT 390 engine but could have the regular 390 4 bbl. or 390 2 bbl. If I didn't have my 57 This would be my second choice for a nice driver.

Beautiful looking car.

Thanks, my memory is going south, I think the GT also had stripes if I recall.

I agree, that's why I took the pic, a '66-'67 Fairlane (or Galaxy) will be my next car, but with this garage project, I doubt I will ever be able to afford another car.....

Before I bought my 57 I went and looked at a 66 Fairlane GTA in Gresham, Oregon. Same dark green as the bullet Mustang with parchment interior. Overall the car was pretty good, very rust free and 95% original. It had a right side quarter panel replaced on it that the owner didn't mention on the phone when talked about it. Could have had it for 6k but I thought it was a little high. Now it would be worth 3 times that much. Oh well, you win some you lose some.

My first semi serious street strip car was a 66 Fairlane 390 GTA hardtop, original paint, black ,white GT stripes, and red interior. Ran mid 12s at 110 MPH in the mid 70s, sold it less engine, trans, and I replaced the 4.56 31 spline Detroit locker 9" back to the original 3.25 28 spline setup. Sold it in 1978 for $300.00, pretty sure the factory GT hood alone would be worth twice that today. Just one of a dozen or so that I wish I would have kept!
1959 Meteor 2 door sedan , 428 Cobra Jet 4 speed. Been drag racing Fords (mostly FEs) 47 years and counting.
Previous 50s Fords include 57 Custom 4 door, 2 57 Ford Sedan Deliveries, 59  Country Sedan, and as a 9 year old, fell in love with the family 58 2 door Ranch Wagon.

I thought the '66 Fairlane had the coolest look!  But I also thought the Fairlane's big brother, the '65 Galaxie, was even better.  Since Ford planned to release the '65 Galaxie with the new L and M code engines...427 4V SOHC and the 427 8V SOHC.

I bought a nice 65 Galaxy with a 390 for the wife from a guy I worked with in 1975 for $250 I think the color was called Vintage Burgundy?  He said the trans wasn't shifting right and probably needed rebuilding. It only needed a new vacuum modulator  :002:

In 65 when I graduated from high school I ordered a 65 Fairlane 2 dht, with a 289 hipro. Man that thing was wild, and so was I. I drove it for 3 years and every piece of sheet metal was replace at least once except for the roof, I never tipped it over.

Thats funny Alvin. It must be nice to have new car right out of school. In 65 I was driving a 54 Chevy that burned a quart of oil a day  :005: In 66 I got a 57 Ford and have never looked at another brand since..

Back in the late 70's into the 80's I used to buy Galaxies as winter beaters. Everything from Custom 500's, LTD's to Country Squires, had them all. One of the most abused but dependable cars
I've ever owned was 1965 Custom 500. Bought it for $100, drove it through the winters for 4-5 years, then sold it to a buddy for $100 as he wanted the 289 for his 63 Fairlane wagon. Ford really did have those cars sorted out. I guess that's why they were used so much for police, taxis, etc...

You are right Jim, it was nice. I worked and saved all though high school and saved all the money I could. If I remember right the fairlane cost me $2250 or close to it. I think I still have the paper work for it in my showroom. I had to borrow $400.00 from my dad so that I could pay cash for it.  At the time I also had 2 real nice 57's. After the new car came they got to rest quit a bit.

I worked a few part time jobs during high school but they barely paid for my gas LOL. And now 60 years later I may need to get a job to pay for my gas!  :005:
