Quote from: glenmichael on 2025-06-28 10:58Thanks Randy, the last time I removed a valve spring with the head still on was early 1970s in the on base auto shop, I like your suggestion/method better! Where did you get your valve spring tool it looks like a good investment for what I'm planning? This is a perfect example why I Love this Site, the shared knowledge is Amassing!!

Yea, the knob type spring compressor works great on lawn mowers, tractors, and low performance valve trains but won't work on higher pressure springs with damper (inner and outer) springs.  I have one similar to the one pictured.

Testing valve spring pressure and changing valve seals is not one of favorite tasks.  I don't complicate the process...I make sure the transmission is in neutral, ignition off, remove all the plugs, insert my compression tester adapter and shot air.  The piston goes down, both valves are closed and ready for spring removal...no bar...no rope.

Hello Everyone, Gary the procedure that you mentioned is from what I can remember the way I was taught but that was 50 years ago, and the truth is sometimes I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner yesterday!! What amount of air pressure did you leave in the cylinder till you finished with the intake and exhaust valves? I don't plan on doing the work for a while, but the questions and answers now will help when the time comes, providing the Mind remembers!! Thanks for all the input, Everyone... Long live the motors that move these 57s down the road.

Air pressure?  My compressor runs about 175 lbs.  But 100 lbs. should be enough.

I have a complete set of machinist' tools for sale, including an antique Guerstner 26" oak tool box that I just recovered (the box was originally black "leatherette"), and relined with new felt. The tools are primarily for a milling machinist, and there is not much there for a lathe machinist. If anybody here knows of someone with a milling machine, or an apprentice, this would be a great acquisition. I'm asking 1400, and that includes another small toolbox with set-up stuff and lots of end mills, drills, etc. I got pictures if anybody wants to see.
The new boxes are being sold by Amazon, and retail for 2395.!!!!!!! empty! plus tax and shipping.
Speaking of shipping, I will not ship, so will have to be somebody within a reasonable driving distance from me in Amarillo, but I wouldn't have a problem meeting somebody somewhere.

Got a new computer last night...........just checking to see if things are working ok. Windows 11 is alot different. I'm trying to figure out how to install Firefox and Yahoo. At least I can connect to the forum thru Edge, but it's not my preference.

Southern Rods & Parts acquired Fatman Fabrication.  Maybe some things will become available.

Yeah, Windows 11 takes some getting used to; not a big fan of Edge, I know I shouldn't, but I still use
Chrome.

On another note, any bites on your car?

I don't know if you remember, but a few years back, I had a friend paint a spin on the VonDutch "Flying Eyeball" on my '39.

Today he did a little more work that I never got a chance to go back and get done.

A little accent striping on the glass:

...and a continuation on the VonDutch thing RatFink style:

There are only two forums I've frequented over the past 15 years or so...this one and the 52-59 Ford social club on the Hamb. Today the owner of the Hamb has pretty much decided to do away with the side forums. As of now, they are gone, and not likely to return. Damn.
