Quote from: 59meteor on 2025-01-03 14:56Yikes! I always liked the 72 Gran Torino Sports, that poos car certainly got some of the horrible late 70s, "Disco era" modifications. Likely had shag carpet, and a Craig Power Play 8 track tape deck, with wedge speakers just sitting on the rear window deck panel, air shocks, and a set of Thrush mufflers or "Purple Horny" glass packs. That poor car!

Even back in the day I used to cringe when I saw a nice old musclecar of any brand with a big hole hacked in the roof. Many cars ruined with that mod.

My poor car got mugged along the way with a crappie van sunroof!  Not the only way to fix it but I skinned it.

Nice work Gary; looks like you bonded it instead of welding.

Gary I just can't believe you would find that well thought out accessory unattractive?  I remember when you posted the roof replacement, nice job!

There was some crazy hackery done to a lot of cars in the 70s and 80s. There was a shop near Vancouver that put a 67 Mustang fastback on a shortened full frame chassis, from a late 60s-early 70 Galaxie, perhaps, so the car was probably at least 500 pounds heavier, and the track width was obviously wider, and then made "Gull Wing" doors for it, not the flip up "Lambo"  doors, but full Gull Wing doors, like a Delorean, Bricklin, or Mercedes. It was an on again/off again project for decades. I eventually did see it finally finished, after many years of it being dragged to car shows as a "work in progress", I don`t know how much labor time and $$$ was "invested" in this Mustang, but certainly not my cup of tea. And one would assume that with the large engine compartment, it would have had some monstrous big block engine, but nope, just a 302.

I think we seem to forget that these were "just cars" back then and people would modify them just like people (kids) do to their cars today. To them, they were just merely a form of transportation, possibly hand-me-down vehicles when they were replaced with newer vehicles. I mean if you look back to the '7o's, you would see Mustangs with ski racks, Corvette's with bolt on golf club holders, etc....

Yeah, I remember when I was a kid, seeing so many 50s Fords and Mercurys getting destroyed in Demolition Derbys, or made into oval track race cars, (luckily most of the cars cut up for oval track racing were Chevys), and many of the Musclecars were the owners only means of transportation, so that meant snow tires and salted roads here in Canada. I remember driving my M code 351 Cleveland 4 barrel 70 Mustang fastback, with a Shaker hood and 4 speed, driving it in the snow with Firestone "Snow Biter" snow tires on the back, and looping it on the freeway on my way to work, passing a transit bus, and hitting a ridge of snow that the snow plows had pushed into the center lane. I was going about 60 MPH, with 3 other older guys in the car (we took turns car pooling to work, to help each other from buying so much gas , at 47 cents a Gallon!)before Canada switched to the metric system. The Mustang must had done at least 3 360 degree spins, luckily it stayed on the paved surface, although when it finally stopped, the bus that I had passed, was almost right at my drivers door. Luckily he saw the incident, and had time to bring his bus to a stop. Wasn`t long after that, before I started buying winter beaters to drive in bad weather, although many of them ended up being somewhat collectable cars (66 Malibu 2 door hardtop, 65 Pontiac Tempest 2 door, 63 Acadian (Canadian Chevy 11 ) convertible, 65 Valiant Signet 2 dr hard top, 273 4 speed, 66 VW Beetle, etc), but back then, they were just cheap old used cars that I usually paid $200. or less for.

My go to winter beaters were pretty much always Galaxies of various years. Solidly built, always room for six, generally adult driven and most important, cheap. Never paid more than $200 for one. Ah, the good old days.

Roof was bonded with 1-1/2 hour panel adhesive.  I did it by myself and needed most of the 1-1/2 hour.  I like some of these modern materials and panel adhesive is one of them.  I still butt weld and metal finish all cosmetic joints but any lap joints are glued.  About the same metal prep but no heat warping or metal damage and no need for seam sealer!  It is coming up on 15 years ago that roof was skinned and no issues.

CobraJoe

I was Leary also, but I bonded the two quarter panels on my Bronco and I never looked back; zero warpage and rusting of welded areas that you cant get two. I only had to fill the 5 holes from the screws on the B-pillar.
I'm sold on it and use it were ever I can.  :023:

Met the original owner and builder of the Keystone Dragways in Ste. Anne Manitoba in 1964.  Shared some of his photo album and this Comet with CANADA in the grille and Orbiter on the door was in there.  Don't know the car but would like it today.
